Our School Philosophy

South Miami students will discover accessible and challenging aspects in all academic and extracurricular areas. The needs of our learners will direct decision-making as our faculty and students work as a team with parents, other schools in our feeder pattern, local business leaders, local universities and officials in the City of South Miami. Our students self-esteem will be reinforced through their successful performance on standardized tests. We will engender successful student participation in career and employment opportunities and monitor student progress in the continually developing field of technology.

    Principal

    Gilberto Bonce

On behalf of all the teachers and staff, I extend a sincere welcome to all the students who will be a part of South Miami Senior High School. South Miami Senior High is currently a “B” school, just 4 points shy of the illusive “A”, but we are working hard to attain that “A.” Our school is known for its rich academic traditions established over the past four decades, and we look forward to continuing in that great tradition. Our students are accepted to colleges and universities throughout the world and earned in excess of six million dollars in scholarships last school year.

We encourage all of our students to perform well academically and to participate in the some of the many extra-curricular activities offered in Cobra Country. Our athletic teams are frequently district and regional champions and occasionally state champions. Our magnet program (Band, Orchestra, Fine Arts, Photography and Television Production), JROTC program and academies are recognized locally and nationally for their accomplishments and acclaimed successes. Additionally, our numerous student clubs and honor societies perform many community service projects to give back to our surrounding communities.

South Miami Senior High School prepares it’s students to succeed in tomorrow’s global community.

    Sincerely,

    GILBERTO D. BONCE, Principal

As the Alma Mater says, the "hope and pride" of South Miami Senior opened its doors to students for the first time on November 10, 1971. The original student body selected the Cobra mascot and the school colors of orange, brown, and white. Today the Cobra mascot reigns from the third story roof of Cobra Hall, greeting all who pass by "Cobra Country" on Miller Road.

Since opening, South Miami has had five principals: Dr. Warren G. Burchell, Ms. Judy Weiner, Mr. Thomas L. Shaw, Mr. Eugene Butler, Mr. Craig Speziale, and now Mr. Gilberto Bonce.

Dr. Burchell has been the longest serving principal in South Miami Senior High history, serving 22 years. Mr. Shaw brought with him a whole new era of curriculum and technological innovation and the school went from one magnet program, to becoming a full-fledged magnet school, the South Miami School of the Arts.

Mr. Bonce oversaw the opening of a new building on the South Miami Senior High campus, adding new computer labs and art studios. The second building was named Cobra Tower and the original was named Cobra Hall. His tenure has also seen updates to the school auditorium, including a new projection screen and projector system. Mr Bonce has also overseen massive technology upgrades to the school, including adding interactive boards to every classroom in the school. His tenure has seen our school achieve an A grade status and recognition by US News and World Report as a Silver rated high school.

Today, Mr. Bonce leads South Miami Senior through the "changes and challenges" mentioned in the school song. Through his leadership greatness lies ahead for South Miami Senior High.
