Welcome to the South Miami Senior High Magnet School of the
Arts Homepage. The South Miami School of the Arts is a total Communications,
Performing and Visual Arts program. The five strands are Photography,
Music, Visual Media Arts, Visual Fine Arts, and Television Production. Students
selected for the program spend two hours per day in their selected
strand and spend the rest of the day in their academic and elective classes.
South Miami Senior High offers a full program of gifted, advanced academics,
honors, electives, extracurricular activities and sports.
South Miami Visual
Arts Magnet students participated in The Shapes of Space
Exhibition at the 801 Art Studios. The show, featuring 340 works,
is presented by Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the Division
of Life Skills and Special Projects. Congratulations to the following
students for their entire's in the show.

Last Thursday (10/23) Nike partnered with Miami-Dade County Public
Schools on a contest challenging high school students to create
art expressing their Hispanic pride. Winners included SMSH student,
Laura Garcia. As the first-place winner, Laura received a special
Nike award and $2,500 check presented on her behalf to the school's
art program. The school's student body also will receive a Nike
T-shirt with an image of Garcia's artwork. Congratulations to
Laura Garcia for her award-winning entry.
MUSIC (Band,
Orchestra, & Chorus)- Musical performance opportunities exist
in the areas of Band, Orchestra and Chorus. Courses are also offered
in Music Theory that seek to enhance student skills. Ensembles include
Advanced Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, Concert Chorus, Jazz Band, Jazz
Vocal and Marching Band.
PHOTOGRAPHY - Photography Students
will learn the photographic skills needed to create scholarship portfolios.
Students will work in many areas of photography such as: Journalism,
Studio and Fine Art. Students will work in black and white and learn
to work in high-end digital photography using the latest software and
equipment.
TELEVISION PRODUCTION - Students
in Television Production will study the history of television and develop
skills in the areas of scripting, production, camera handling, lighting
and sound. Students will produce a series of videos such as: commercials,
news, public service announcements, and documentaries. Students will
also produce films and learn filmmaking techniques using video.
VISUAL FINE ARTS (Drawing & Painting)-
In the Visual Fine Arts strand students will work in the more traditional
areas of the Visual Arts. The emphases will be on painting, drawing
and design. Students will produce high quality portfolios for scholarships
and Advanced Placement classes.
VISUAL MEDIA ARTS (Computer
Graphics & Commercial Art)- In the Visual Media Arts strand,
students specialize in image processing techniques as they are applied
to a variety of communications, design and fine art areas. Students
will work in a multitude of media as well as with the latest technology
as they produce high quality portfolios for scholarships.
