Following the video conference, the team gathered to brainstorm ideas for a community service project. A criteria for the project that was important to us was literacy, as it kept the project in the spirit of the student book club.
The group members agreed that building a library in a homeless shelter was the best project. The Camillus House organization directed us to a shelter in Brownsville that had expressed interest in having a library. The Brownsville Christian Housing Center was established as a shelter in 2006 and houses a permanent exhibit featuring a photography collection spotlighting African American history in Miami. The building was originally the first hospital serving the African-American community in the area. Click here for more information about the facility.
