Love Medicine

By Louise Erdrich

Louise Erdrich's first novel 'Love Medicine' portrays the death of the young Indian lady, June Kashpaw, as an event which causes the other characters to return to the reservation through actions or through reminiscences. June is presented as an innocent, Christlike figure, caught in the conflict between native tradition and the modern world. Following her death, her son, Lipsha, crosses the bridge over the boundary river, an act which symbolizes his choice to bridge cultures to pave the way for the survival of his own tribal community.
