Magnet Department News 2010-11

  • Digital Art magnet student Terence Coffy won an “Arts for Life! Scholarship” for $1000. This scholarship was founded by Mrs. Columba Bush to promote and support arts education in Florida’s schools. There will be an awards luncheon where all 25 scholarship winners will be honored on June 27, 2011 in St. Petersburg, Florida.

  • The following Magnet Fine Art students participated in the Impressions in Watercolor and the Dade Heritage Trust Exhibit. Congratulations to the following students for their acceptance into the 25th Annual Impressions in Watercolor exhibition.  The award reception is scheduled for Thursday, February 17 - 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

  • The Scholastic Art Awards 2011 is a national art competition that is locally hosted by the Miami  Art Museum at 101 West Flagler Street in downtown Miami.  The show will be open for viewing until February 13, 2011. Portfolio Finalists and Gold Key winners are sent to New York for the national level of judging and possible scholarships. The following South Miami young artists participated in this prestigious juried exhibition:

  • Please congratulate our entire band department as they participated in solo and ensemble and jazz music performance assessments this weekend.  We had 19 Superior ratings for solos and ensembles and the jazz band earned straight Superiors and qualified for state evaluation! In addition, our color guard placed 3rd in their first indoor competition EVER in the history of the school in a division of 10 other established groups!

  • Dr. Marta Perez's Town Hall Meeting took place on Wednesday, September 29th, at 7:00 PM in our school auditorium.  The superintendent, Alberto Carvalho, was the guest speaker at the meeting. Below are some highlights from the Magnet Jazz Ensemble entertaining the audience.
